In my opinion, should replace the USB 2.0 to USB 3.0, enter the new processors Ivy Bridge quad core (maybe even on the server models) and a dedicated VGA ATI 7000 series, in this configuration, along with can add up 8 GB of RAM and a second disk (SSD perhaps?) aftermarker, Mac mini in my opinion, could very well be a desktop computer for all purposes and is not defined as a media center.
Mac mini 2012 some features :
Ivy Bridge Quad Core CPU
4 x USB 3.0
HDMI PORT
THUNDERBOLT PORT
READER SD
4GB 1333MHz DDR3
ATI RADEON 7000 SERIES
500GB 7200rpm HDD
Ability to add a second HDD and increase the ram, and choose a more powerful CPU

With this configuration you buy a mac mini as a desktop computer instead of an iMac?
The USB3 forget it, link only on thunderbolt, as the discrete video card will put only the top model.
